Why the franchisee of the future is more than a business owner
On World Franchise Day, I wanted to reflect on how dramatically the role of a franchisee has evolved.

Traditionally, success in franchising was often measured by operational excellence: following proven systems, delivering great customer service and building a profitable business. Those fundamentals remain as important as ever, but today's most successful franchisees are increasingly taking on another role – one that wasn't part of the franchise handbook even a decade ago.
They're becoming digital storytellers
As social media continues to shape how people discover, evaluate and connect with businesses, franchisees are no longer simply operators of a business. They're building communities, sharing expertise and creating trust long before a customer ever makes an enquiry.
In many ways, the person behind the business has become just as important as the business itself.
Consumers want more than products and services
The way people engage with businesses has fundamentally changed.
In travel, we see this every day. Customers are often discovering destinations, gathering ideas and seeking inspiration through social media before they're ready to book. Increasingly, they're following individuals as much as brands.
This trend isn't unique to travel. Across sectors, customers want to engage with businesses that feel authentic, relatable and human.
For franchisees, that creates a significant opportunity.
Why authentic storytelling matters
One of the biggest advantages franchisees have is authenticity.
Unlike large corporations, franchise business owners are often deeply embedded in their local communities. They have personal experiences, real customer relationships and genuine expertise to share.
The franchisees who are seeing the greatest success online aren't necessarily producing polished content every day. They're sharing real stories, showcasing customer experiences, and offering advice, insight and reassurance.
In short, they're allowing customers to see the human side of their business.
That's important because trust has become one of the most valuable currencies in today's marketplace. Customers want to know who they're buying from, particularly when they're making significant purchasing decisions.
Authentic storytelling helps build that trust in a way that traditional advertising increasingly cannot.
The modern franchisee needs modern skills
Of course, recognising the importance of digital storytelling is one thing. Developing the confidence to do it consistently is another.
Many business owners didn't start their entrepreneurial journey expecting to create social media content, engage with online communities or build a personal brand. Yet these skills are becoming increasingly valuable across almost every sector.
That's why franchisors have a responsibility to evolve alongside their franchisees.
Providing a strong business model remains essential, but so too does supporting franchisees in developing the skills required to thrive in a digital-first environment. That means ongoing training, coaching and practical guidance around everything from content creation to customer engagement.
A single workshop isn't enough. Confidence is built over time through continuous learning and support.
The future of franchising is human
As we celebrate World Franchise Day, I believe the future of franchising remains incredibly bright.
The entrepreneurs who will thrive over the coming years will be those who successfully combine proven business systems with authentic personal connection. They'll use technology to amplify relationships rather than replace them.
Most importantly, they'll understand that customers don't just buy products or services. They buy trust, expertise and confidence.
Franchising has always been built on people. Today's digital landscape hasn't changed that. If anything, it's just made it more important than ever.
