Three ways to discover South Africa: How our Travel Counsellors experienced one of the world's most diverse destinations
At Travel Counsellors, we know that the best way to sell a destination is to experience it first-hand.
That's why we're continually investing in product trips that give our business owners the knowledge, confidence and personal insights needed to create unforgettable holidays for their customers.
We’ve partnered with South Africa Tourism and Sense of Africa to take 25 Travel Counsellors on three specially curated educational trips across South Africa – each designed for a different level of destination expertise.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all itinerary, we created three unique journeys: one for Travel Counsellors experiencing South Africa for the first time, one for those looking to rediscover the destination, and one for our South Africa specialists who wanted to explore lesser-known regions and experiences.
The result? Three incredible adventures showcasing the diversity, depth and customer appeal of one of the world's most exciting long-haul destinations.
Introducing South Africa: Cape Town, the Garden Route and game reserves
For Travel Counsellors new to South Africa, the focus was on experiencing the country's most iconic highlights.
The journey began in Cape Town, where the group explored the dramatic landscapes of the Cape Peninsula, travelled along the famous Chapman's Peak Drive, visited Cape Point and met the resident penguins at Boulders Beach. They also experienced the vibrant culture, cuisine and hospitality that make the city so popular.

From there, they travelled along the spectacular Garden Route, taking in coastal towns, lagoons and forests before heading to Pumba Private Game Reserve for an unforgettable safari experience. With game drives, luxury accommodation and close encounters with wildlife, the trip demonstrated how easily South Africa combines city, coast and safari into one seamless itinerary.
Rediscovering South Africa: Beyond the classic safari
For Travel Counsellors who had previously visited South Africa, our "Rediscover South Africa" itinerary focused on deepening their knowledge and showcasing newer experiences alongside some of the country's most iconic attractions.
Beginning along the breathtaking Panorama Route, the group visited landmarks including God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels before heading into the heart of the Kruger region.

The itinerary included stays at Kruger Untamed's Tshokwane River Camp and the extraordinary Kruger Shalati – the luxury train permanently stationed on a bridge above the Sabie River. These contrasting safari experiences highlighted the breadth of accommodation options available to clients, from immersive tented camps to ultra-luxury lodges.
The group also explored Johannesburg and Soweto, gaining a deeper understanding of South Africa's history, culture and modern identity – experiences that help Travel Counsellors build more meaningful and well-rounded itineraries for their customers.
Off the beaten track: KwaZulu-Natal and hidden South Africa
Our third itinerary was designed specifically for Travel Counsellors who already know South Africa exceptionally well and wanted to uncover new stories to tell their customers.
Exploring KwaZulu-Natal and the Elephant Coast region, the trip showcased a side of South Africa that many travellers have yet to discover. The group stayed at boutique coastal properties, learned about the fascinating history of the Anglo-Zulu War through visits to Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, and experienced the rich cultural heritage that makes this region so unique.
They also explored the scenic Lebombo Mountains, cruised across Lake Jozini and enjoyed exclusive safari experiences in the mFulaWozi Wilderness, where conservation, community and luxury tourism work hand in hand.

For experienced South Africa sellers, the trip opened up entirely new opportunities to create differentiated itineraries for clients looking to venture beyond the traditional tourist trail.
Why educational trips matter
These product trips are about far more than ticking attractions off a list.
By staying in the properties, meeting local partners, experiencing excursions first-hand and building relationships with suppliers, our Travel Counsellors gain insights that simply can't be found in a brochure or online training course.
That knowledge translates directly into better customer experiences. Whether recommending the right safari lodge, suggesting an unexpected stop on the Garden Route or helping a client uncover South Africa's hidden gems, our Travel Counsellors can do so with genuine confidence and personal experience.
It's also one of the many ways we invest in our business owners, helping them develop specialist expertise, grow their confidence and build successful travel businesses.
