Hitting the ground running: Alison’s early success as a Travel Counsellor

When Alison joined Travel Counsellors in January, she knew she was ready for a new chapter. What she didn’t necessarily expect was just how quickly things would take off.

Her story is a powerful example of what’s possible when industry knowledge is combined with focus and the right support.

Building momentum from day one

For Alison, the early days were all about getting out there and being seen.

“I have kept things simple and focused on being as visible as possible in my local area,” she explains. “I’ve been delivering leaflets, putting up posters, sitting in coffee shops with my branded laptop and hoodie, and getting involved in community events where I can chat with anyone and everyone about travel.”

It’s a deliberately hands-on approach — one rooted in local presence and real conversations.

“Local WhatsApp groups have been great, and schools are an amazing way of getting yourself known,” she says. “I’ve also kept my social media updated and refreshed my LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn has actually been really powerful — people see your new role and reach out or share it.”

At the heart of it is a simple principle: show up and let people know you’re there.

Support that accelerates confidence

While Alison’s proactive mindset has played a huge role in her early success, she’s clear the backing around her has been just as important.

“The support has honestly been incredible. The Travel Counsellors community is amazing,” she says. “My local Travel Counsellors took me under their wing, and the group I started with are still all connected and supporting one another.”

That shared experience was particularly valuable in the first few weeks and months.

“We all bring different skills and share them weekly, which really helps. The mentors are an amazing asset too — mine has been invaluable in guiding me every day.”

She also highlights the role of the wider business, especially during more complex moments.

“Head office support is second to none. Especially with everything happening in the world recently, the whole of Travel Counsellors has pulled together and worked tirelessly to protect both us and our clients. After 30 years in the travel industry, it’s a level of support that stands out.

“You are your own boss, but you’re never alone.”

Learning without pressure

Like many experienced travel professionals, Alison had some initial concerns around the systems and technology.

“The induction process was excellent,” she says. “Dawn in the training team was absolutely brilliant. I’m not a technical whizz, and it can take me a little while to process new systems, so at first I did wonder how I’d get on.”

That uncertainty disappeared quickly.

“She was patient, supportive and helped me every step of the way. Even now she still helps when needed, which makes a huge difference.”

Taking the leap — and not looking back

That step into the unknown is something many experienced professionals wrestle with. For Alison, the biggest concern was financial.

“The main worry was starting with no guaranteed income. That is scary — and it should be, because it’s a big step.”

But after some time to embed, that perspective has shifted.

“I feel confident in my business and understand it takes time to build. The great thing is that I’m already earning, which reassures me that I made the right decision.”

Building a business that fits around life

Beyond the early financial success, what matters most to Alison is what this move gives her personally.

“What excites me most is the work-life balance,” she explains. “It was one of the main reasons I decided to take this step.”

Running her own business means she can finally shape her working life around her family, rather than the other way around.

Her focus now is clear: continue building her client base, become a trusted travel expert in her community, and create something that is truly her own.

Advice for others considering the move

“Don’t overthink it and don’t be afraid to start simple. Get yourself out there and be visible,” she says. “Leaflets, posters, coffee shops, community events, WhatsApp groups, schools and local shops are all great ways to start conversations.”

She also emphasises the importance of using your existing network.

“Don’t underestimate the power of friends and family. They are your first and biggest supporters — they will promote and recommend you more than you expect.”

And perhaps most importantly, make the most of the support around you.

“The Travel Counsellors community is incredible. You’re surrounded by people who genuinely want you to succeed.”
